Alchemy is an open source drawing application developed by myself in collaboration with Jacob Hina from mid-2007. The project is aimed at exploring how we can sketch, draw, and create on computers in new ways. Alchemy isn’t software for creating finished artwork, but rather a sketching environment that focuses on the absolute initial stage of the creation process. Shown above are some example concept art pieces created by Alchemy users, Chris Waller and Nicolas Francoeur, and a video of renowned concept artist Andrew Jones demoing Alchemy in Shanghai.

The project received generous funding from the Exploratory Software Project here in Tokyo. For more information or to download it and give it a try, check out the Alchemy website.

At the start of 2006 I worked with Takumi Endo and Nao Tokui on the Phonethica Project. In January 2007, Phonethica Desktop was released in beta for OSX and it includes a generative application icon which I coded and designed with Nao. As one of the key themes of Phonethica is diversity it seemed a fitting choice to create an identity which represented this.

Above you can see the original logo I designed, a screenshot of one iteration of the icon, and a demo Xcode project; the source can be downloaded here. It uses the IconFamily class and is licensed with Creative Commons. If you find it useful please let me know.

A t-shirt design for New Zealand brand Huffer, released in September 2006. The design is somewhat of homage to Peter Saville, designer of the Joy Division 'Unknown Pleasures' sleeve, originally sourced from the Cambridge Encyclopaedia Of Astronomy. I created the graphic with a script I wrote for Scriptographer, that maps the colour of a bitmap image to the height of the horitzonal lines. While running the script it scrolls down, drawing line by line in an interesting way. I thought I would capture those redraws and post the animation here.

A T-Shirt design for internet radio station Samurai.fm created it in a generative manner using Flash. Selecting the final design is always a lot harder than it sounds, so I left it up to them to pick out one they liked from the myriad of variations. The t-shirt was formerly available online from the Samurai.fm shop, but has since sold otu!

The design itself represents 'internet broadcasting'; these waves generating some misty Japanese like landscape and mountain patterns. Clicking on the design will generate a new pattern. The source .fla file is here.

A series of animations for a Wellington restaurant/bar called "The Last Supper Club", playing on two plasma screens behind and to the side of the bar. Whilst the name sounds biblical the interior is anything but. Thus the circular forms echoing the interior, the pattern derived from the brand and some subtle crosses with blood-red wine colouring.
